Not only is today the first day of summer, but it’s also National Smoothie Day!
(How funny that they decided to make it today! I’m sure it has something to do with the warm weather coming and many people wanting to drink cool, hydrating drinks…)
But apart from just today or just during the summer, drinking a smoothie is beneficial for you all year long. It was actually smoothies that started me on my journey to healthier living(!) I asked my husband for a NutriBullet one year for Christmas and it took off from there! Once I started to see and feel the difference in how I was feeling I knew I needed to learn more about nutrition and what it does for us.
We all want to be healthy, so in order to make this happen, we need to ensure we take care of our bodies. This includes a healthy diet and an active lifestyle. A good place to start is at the very beginning of our day: Breakfast. It is the very first meal of the day (you know, “breaking the fast” from overnight), and also the meal that is going to get you through your day by supplying your body with nutrients that will support high energy levels and fight off any signs of fatigue. A healthy breakfast offers many benefits, such as improved concentration during the day, better mental and physical performance and the strength that is needed to do physical activities. It will also contribute towards a nutrient-rich diet that supplies the body with vitamins for skin health, mental health, and to contribute to the general well-being of the human body.
Hippocrates wisely said:
What are Green Smoothies?
A green smoothie is made from green leafy vegetables, combined with nutrient-rich fruits, a liquid base, a healthy fat, and a source of protein. They are a convenient way to get a whole bunch of nutrients in a single meal, they’re super easy to make, and they can be taken on the go for those hectic mornings (rather than skipping breakfast!).

If you’re new to smoothies, start off slow with fruits, spinach, liquid, protein and healthy fats. Protein is essential to your smoothie as it keeps the cravings away, balances blood sugar, boosts metabolic rate, enhances detoxification and is important for the production of hormones, antibodies, and enzymes. Protein powders are optional, you can also get added protein from some superfoods like hemp seeds, chia seeds, and quinoa.
My Go-to Green Smoothie Recipe
- ½ banana
- 1 cup frozen pineapple or mango
- ¼ ripe avocado, peeled
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 cup of spinach
- 1 tbsp. chia seeds
- 1 tbsp. hemp seeds
Put all your ingredients in a blender and blend for 30-60 seconds or until smooth. If you’d like it thinner, just add a bit of water to make it to your desired consistency.
Pour into a glass and enjoy!
